Election Day Work
Where to Apply
County Boards of Elections hire temporary workers for election day work at polling or voting sites. Monies earned from this temporary work do not reduce unemployment benefits. If you are interested in Election Day work, contact your local county Board of Elections. Check the blue pages of your telephone book under County government for the number of the county Board of Elections.
Does temporary Election Day work affect my unemployment benefits?
Individuals receiving unemployment benefits will not be considered unavailable for work if they worked on Election Day for a county election board.
Also, they do not have to report any monies paid by the county election board for this election day work. These monies will not reduce the unemployment weekly benefit amount. Please note: This is an exception for individuals working on election day at the polls. Usually, individuals who have earnings must report them when claiming unemployment benefits.
To prevent delays in benefit payments, unemployed individuals who do Election Day work should have the following answers to certain questions when they file a continued claim for unemployment benefits.
Question 1. Were you able and available for work?
You should answer "yes" if you were available for work during that week. Your work for the county election board on Election Day does not make you unavailable for work.
Question 2. Were you actively seeking work?
You should answer "yes" if you were actively seeking work other than the one day you worked for the county election board.
Question 7. Did you work during the weeks claimed?
You should answer "no" if you did not work anywhere except for the Election Day work for the county election board. If you did work somewhere else, then report only the monies paid from that work. Do not report the monies paid for Election Day work for the county election board.
