Self-Enrolled in Training

If you enroll in full-time training on your own, an unemployment insurance claims examiner must approve your training program and decide if you are eligible to continue collecting unemployment benefits. The examiner can make this decision only when you are already in training and claim benefits during that week. The examiner cannot make a ruling before it happens. When you self-enroll in a training program, telephone the Reemployment Call Center to schedule an interview with an examiner.

If you self-enroll, you will not be eligible for Additional Benefits during Training or for a training grant. These benefits must be pre-approved by a career counselor through the Workforce Development Program (WDP). If you are interested in a training grant or the additional unemployment benefits you must meet with a state career counselor before you enroll in a training program. Contact your local One-Stop Career Center for an appointment with a WDP counselor. The address and telephone number of the local One-Stop Career Center can be found at www.wnjpin.net or in the blue pages of your telephone directory.

Exception: If you were enrolled in training while you were also working and wish to continue that training program after being laid off, ask to meet with a counselor. You may be considered for the training benefits and the Additional Benefits during Training if the counselor approves your continued enrollment in the training program.
