May-12-14 Christie Administration Continues to Connect New Jersey Veterans with Jobs, Services
Career Fairs and Employment Opportunities to be Highlighted through Memorial Day
TRENTON, May 12, 2014 - Building on Governor Chris Christie’s strong commitment to New Jersey veterans and their families, the state Department of Labor and Workforce Development and other state agencies will join and support several special events leading up to Memorial Day and beyond that link former service members to employment opportunities and other helpful resources.
As the nation prepares to honor and remember the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country, the Labor Department along with the state Department of Military and Veteran Affairs and the state Parole Board, will work cooperatively with veteran services organizations and others to connect veterans with job opportunities, training programs and services ranging from legal advice to housing and medical assistance.
“The freedoms and the quality of life we enjoy in this nation have been built on the sacrifices of our veterans. The very least we can do for them is to help those veterans who are unemployed to connect with New Jersey employers and, for those needing aid, link them with the public assistance we can provide,” said Labor Commissioner Harold J. Wirths.
Labor Department staff will join several veteran hiring initiatives this week and in following weeks, including “Hiring Our Heroes” career fairs hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion. The department has nearly 40 veteran representatives on staff, many of whom are veterans themselves, and they will be working with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve and directly with organizations and employers who are trying to recruit veterans.
